One of the great things about staying at The Canalside Cottage is that you can enjoy the peace and quiet of a canal-side village while still being within easy reach of two lively East Midlands cities - Derby and Nottingham.

Whether you're looking for history, shopping, culture, family days out, or somewhere to enjoy lunch and a wander, both cities offer plenty to explore.

Discover Derby

Derby is particularly close ot The Canalside Cottage, mkaing it an easy chouce for a day out. The city has a fascinating industrial history and is home to the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, which explores more than 300 years of Derby's history as a city of innovation and manufacturing. Entry is free, apart from some temporary exhibitions.

For something outdoors, Markeaton Park is a great option. It's one of Derby's most popular parks, with gardens, open spaces and activities for visitors of all ages.

You can also explore Derby Museum and Art Gallery, visit Derby Cathedral, wander around the Cathedral Quarter or simply enjoy the city's cafés, restaurants and shops.

If you're interested in history and architecture, Derby also provides access to attractions further afield, including the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Spend a Day in Nottingham

Nottingham offers something a little different, with its famous connections to Robin Hood, its historic buildings and underground caves.

A visit to Nottingham Castle is a great place to start, while underneath the city you can explore the City of Caves, an extensive network of man-made caves carved into the sandstone beneath Nottingham. The nearby National Justice Museum explores the history of crime and punishment.

For something a little more relaxed, head to Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, where you can explore the historic hall, museum and surrounding parkland.

Nottingham city centre is also largely pedestrianised, making it easy to explore on foot while browsing the shops, cafés and restaurants.

Something for Everyone

Whether you're visiting as a couple or bringing the family, both cities offer plenty of options for a day away from the cottage.

For history: explore Derby's Museum of Making or Nottingham Castle and the City of Caves.

For families: enjoy Markeaton Park, Wollaton Hall or one of the cities' many museums.

For shopping: spend some time exploring the city centres and stopping for lunch or coffee.

For culture: discover museums, galleries, theatres and events taking place throughout the year.

For a quieter day: combine a city visit with one of the many parks and green spaces.

Then Come Back to the Cottage

After a busy day exploring Derby or Nottingham, it's lovely to return to somewhere a little quiter. Back at The Canalside Cottage, you can leave the city behind and enjoy the peaceful canal-side setting of Shardlow.

It's the best of both worlds - a relaxing Easr Midlands holiday base with two cities close enough for an easy day out. So whether you're planning a couples holiday, family holiday or a few days exploring the East Midlands, don't forget to put Derby and Nottingham on your list.
